The Nuevo Horizonte (“New Horizon”) Co-operative was established in 1998 by ex-combatants and their families after the signing of the Peace Accords, which ended a two-decade long civil war. Their goal was to develop an ecological, sustainable and communal way of life that would also provide a decent standard of living for themselves and their families.
Facing great odds at first, they have successfully established a school, a medical/dental clinic (which provides free services not only to co-op members but also to others in the community), a poultry farm, a reforestation project, a fish farm, an historical museum (built with assistance from the government of South Korea), a fruit orchard, and also raise corn and other garden vegetables.
